4 Tips for Being Happier Even When You’re Stressed

Elderly Care in Walpole MA: Feeling happier isn't impossible and it doesn't have to take a lot of time or energy, either.

Elderly Care in Walpole MA

Elderly Care in Walpole MABeing a family caregiver can often mean that you’re dealing with situations that cause you stress and that keep you from feeling as happy as you want to be. The good news is that doesn’t have to be a permanent situation and there are things you can do to make the situation better.

Look for the Joy in Every Event

Sometimes it’s harder than at other times to find the joy in a particular situation, but if you look hard enough, you can almost always find something to be happy about. If you’re worried or irritated by the situation, you’re going to find it more difficult to be joyful about any part of the situation. Try focusing on the here and now of the issue and not wishing it were something different. Once you are firmly in the present, it should be easier to find something to be a little happier about.

Smile Until You Feel It

If you’ve been sad for a long time, you might not remember how to smile. You’ve probably heard the statement, “fake it ’til you make it.” What this means for you is to smile and express joy in the traditional physical sense until your emotions catch up. This doesn’t mean that you literally lie to everyone about the fact that you’re sad, but it does mean trying to coax yourself out of the blues.

Move a Little More

Getting a little bit more exercise can make a big difference in how happy you feel. Exercise releases endorphins, and this can make those happy feelings a true reality. Start out slowly, particularly if you haven’t been exercising much. You don’t want to overdo it, because that would definitely put a crimp in your joy.

Keep Up with Friends and Family

Make it a point to spend time with friends and family that you love. The les connected you feel to them, the easier it can be to slip into the doldrums. Whether you’re just meeting for coffee or you have a standing phone call where you catch up, keeping in touch can help you keep your mood positive and happy.

Make a schedule with your loved one’s elderly care providers so you can have time to yourself to work on things that make you happy.
