One problem that can plague quite a few elderly loved ones is that paying attention to what is going on can become more and more difficult. If that’s the case for your loved one, you might need to start using some additional strategies to help her.
Talk to Her Doctor
If your elder loved one is suddenly having difficulty paying attention or the problem has grown measurably worse, you should definitely make an appointment with her doctor. There could be an issue with her medication or your loved one could have a significant health problem that needs to be addressed. Ruling out health problems ensures that you’re not overlooking something important.
Do a Clutter Sweep
Many people don’t think about the fact that clutter can take up quite a bit of your attention. That’s also true for your elder loved one. If there is quite a bit of clutter, no matter what form it takes, then you may want to take some time to try organizing that clutter. Look for piles of paper that you can reduce or file away or knick knacks that you can get under better control. This can also be a safety issue for your loved one, depending on how bad the clutter has gotten.
Keep Instructions on Target
When you need to give your loved one instructions, be mindful of her issues with her attention span. You might want to consider writing down lengthy instructions or break them up into smaller groups. The easier you can make it for your loved one to be able to follow the instructions, the more likely she’ll be to be able to accomplish whatever task you’re undertaking.
Give Your Loved One Her Dignity
No matter what, try to do whatever you can to help preserve your elder loved one’s dignity. This means not making her feel silly or less than for having trouble paying attention. Your loved one can’t help any medical issues that contribute to the problem, and she’s not deliberately trying to be problematic.
